The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European Non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centers: The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C) and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Center (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.
The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow or Associate Research Scientist in Techno-Economic Modelling for Energy and Climate Policy, with a joint appointment in STeDI-RC and EEWRC. The successful candidate is expected to work on project “ACCREU – Assessing Climate Change Risk in Europe” (www.accreu.eu), which is funded by the Horizon Europe program.
The successful candidate should have a background in natural sciences, engineering, or applied economics, with a doctoral degree related to energy systems modelling or a related field, and research output in quantitative modelling and assessments of energy technologies and/or energy and climate policies. The successful candidate is expected to support current research at CyI in the further development of the open-source energy systems model OSeMOSYS for EU countries and the simulation of different energy and climate policy scenarios. The candidate is also expected to be able to attract research funding in the future, to initiate new research in this field.
The rank of the position will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The period of the appointment will be for a duration of two years with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.
Further to the above, depending on experience, the candidate will have the opportunity to assist in the supervision of doctoral students who study at the CyI’s Graduate School.
Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:
Depending on the rank and their prior experience, the selected candidate is expected to be involved in most or all the activities below:
- Performing internationally competitive scientific research through energy systems modelling at centralized and decentralized level
- Contributing to data analyses and impact assessments in energy and climate policy
- Initiating and sustaining high-level collaborative projects with leading research institutions that conduct research in areas related to their respective fields
- Securing financial and other resources from national and international sources
- Communicating the results and implications of research conducted at CyI at all levels, including the academic community, the public at large and decision makers.
- Collaborating in an interdisciplinary and international research environment
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree in Energy or Climate Change Economics, Energy Systems Modelling, Lifecycle Analysis of Energy Technologies, or a related field
- Research experience in technoeconomic analysis and/or economic/econometric modelling and/or energy systems modelling for the simulation of energy and climate policies
- Publications in international academic journals
- Presentations in international conferences
- Excellent knowledge of English language both verbally and in writing
- Very good knowledge of EU energy and climate policies
For the position of Associate Research Scientist, all of the above and:
- Invited lectures in international conferences/workshops/seminars
- 3 years after completion of PhD required
- Experience in preparation of funding proposals for competitive research grants
Preferred Qualifications
- Working experience at international level at post-doctoral level
- Proven experience in the open-source energy modelling software OSEMOSYS or other energy modelling software
- Experience in applying economic modelling methods (e.g. input-output, macroeconometric or general equilibrium models)
- Undergraduate degree in natural/environmental sciences or engineering or economics
