VACANT POSITION FOR A SPECIAL SCIENTIST – BIOINFORMATICS

The biobank.cy Center of Excellence in Biobanking and Biomedical Research of the University of Cyprus has one opening for a Special Scientist, funded by the research program: Biobanking and the Cyprus Human Genome Project (CY-Biobank), which is co-funded by the European Commission, the Republic of Cyprus and the University of Cyprus. Depending on needs and objectives, the funding of the position may be also from other sources.
biobank.cy Center of Excellence
Established in 2019, the biobank.cy is developing the first Biobank in Cyprus while it aspires to fostering frontline research on human genetic diseases and offer better prospects for diagnosis, prevention and therapy, in the framework of precision medicine.
Required Qualifications:
The candidate must:
1. Hold a master's degree in Bioinformatics or a related subject (e.g., Computational Biology, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, etc.). Have proven work/research experience in the field of analysis and management of diverse types of genomics data, resulting from high throughput analyses and in particular next generation sequencing (NGS) data. The candidate must have proven experience in whole genome, whole exome and panel sequencing, variant calling, and annotation. Experience in clinical NGS analyses will be considered as an additional qualification.
2. Be familiar with variant annotation tools and able to build and implement variant filtering strategies/pipelines. Knowledge of tools such as VEP, SAMTOOLS, VARSOME, databases such as DBSNP, UCSC, CLINVAR, and variant classification strategies using ACMG and/or HGMD, is required.
3. Have the ability to perform data mining and to extract interconnecting relevant knowledge from ontologies and databases.
4. Knowledge of Linux and statistical analysis of clinical data, using widely known tools such as RStudio, Python, MATLAB, will be considered as an advantage.
Candidate Profile:
The candidate should be creative, enthusiastic, and passionate about research. A candidate with previous experience in a similar position, who also has proven qualifications and the ability to take initiatives, will be preferred.
Responsibilities:
The candidate will work closely with other researchers regarding:
1. The process and management of diverse types of data by applying appropriate bioinformatics tools and analyses.
2. The design of workflows for analysis, quality assessment, and functional annotation of NGS data (Ampliseq panel sequencing, whole genome and exome sequencing, etc).
3. The investigation of biological questions arising from sequencing data.
Terms of employment
The position is for a two-year full-time contract with the possibility of renewal depending on funding. Funding may be from the CY-Biobank project or from projects funded from other sources, depending on actual needs.
The monthly gross earnings will range depending on qualifications from €2000-€3000. Employee contributions will be deducted from this amount. The program does not provide for the payment of 13th salary.

At least the best three candidates that satisfy the required qualifications, will be interviewed by a 3-member Committee.
