The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The Cyprus Institute invites here applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as an Associate Research Scientist for the Dust-DN project (Dust Doctoral Network) at the Environmental Observations Department of CARE-C. The successful applicant will be responsible for the scientific outcomes of the project and will carry out research in the field of atmospheric dust and/or remote sensing.

Under the Supervision of the Dust-DN Principal Investigator, the successful candidate will coordinate the activities of the Dust Doctoral Network. The network is a strategic international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral alliance of high-profile beneficiaries and associated partners, able to leverage on unique state-of-the-art facilities. Dust-DN is the first doctoral network on a European in this field of research, and it will provide a critical mass on dust-focused studies. It involves 23 partner institutions based in 9 countries, and it will host a number of doctoral candidates on the common theme of atmospheric dust, with focus on (1) Understanding of the fundamentals of dust microphysical properties and processes; (2) Identifying the influence of source regions on atmospheric dust properties; (3) Socio-economic impacts of dust on health, aviation and energy production; and (4) Dust in the global climate system. Among the responsibilities of the Associate Research Scientist will be the coordination of the network together with the principal investigator, the organisation of training events and workshops, the dissemination, exploitation and communication activities, and the reporting of the project to the European Research Executive Agency (REA).

The Associate Research Scientist is expected to bring their scientific expertise to the institute in terms of research in the field of atmospheric dust and/or remote sensing, related to the objectives of Dust-DN, and will contribute to the co-supervision of the doctoral candidates hosted at CyI. In this respect, the candidates should submit their vision, together with the application.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to engage in teaching activities within the Master’s and PhD programs of the CyI, and/or within the Dust-DN training events. It is expected that the Associate Research Scientist will further develop their research within the Institute and contribute to the preparation (and coordination) of future competitive national and international (e.g. Horizon Europe) proposals and supervise young researchers working on the awarded projects.

In general, the Associate Research Scientist is expected to:

  • Contribute to all aspects of sponsored Research, Innovation and/or Development projects (including conducting research, co-authoring publications, implementing deliverables, reporting activities, dissemination activities, etc).
  • Participate in new grant proposals (including the possibility of leading proposals/projects as PI or co-PI).
  • Teach courses at the CyI Graduate School to gain teaching experience and engage graduate students in research projects.

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate, manage and organise the Dust-DN in conjunction with the Principal Investigator
  2. Develop research in the field of atmospheric dust and/or remote sensing, matching and adapting it with the group’s objectives and needs.
  3. Acquisition, scientific exploitation and dissemination of scientific data
  4. Dissemination, exploitation and communication of scientific achievements and results

General Responsibilities of associate research scientists:

  • Conduct research, innovation and development activities based on project requirements.
  • Develop new research ideas and contribute to the Center’s and the Institute’s research agenda.
  • Publish in selective peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Secure funding to sustain research activities.
  • Mentor early-stage researchers, research engineers, and graduate students.
  • Engage in teaching activities relevant to expertise.
  • Participate in consultation activities as per field of expertise and center requirement.
  • Contribute to dissemination activities (such as public seminars or targeted talks) to promote external recognition at the national and international levels.
  • Contribute to planning and organization of Center-level and Institute-level internal and external events (such as workshops, conferences) to promote external recognition at the national and international levels.
  • Engage with industry and public organizations to support the role of CyI.
  • Provide independent input about strategic decisions related to research directions, methodologies, grant applications, etc.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology or closely related discipline
  • Expertise in the field atmospheric dust and/or remote sensing
  • Experience in atmospheric observations and field campaigns within an international context
  • A growing publication record with at least some publications in which the candidate is the first or corresponding author.
  • Excellent presentation skills in scientific conferences and seminars
  • Documented participation in experiments and field campaigns
  • Experience in developing scientific software (computer-based programming)
  • Prior experience as a Post-doctoral Fellow in the research field of atmospheric sciences
  • A growing experience contributing to sponsored research projects.
  • Growing mentoring capabilities.
  • Independent initiative in conjunction with effective teamwork.
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language, both verbal and writing
  • Demonstrated development ability, outstanding organizational, analytical, problem solving and communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to a multicultural/multinational environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in project management
  • Capacity to coordinate and organize a team
  • Teaching record
  • Demonstrated international mobility (field campaigns, scientific and technical training, conferences, workshops, etc.)
  • Driving licence
