UP TO TWO (2) ASSISTANT RESEARCHER A’ POSITIONS IN REMOTE SENSING AND DIGITAL ARCHAEOLOGY

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (www.eratosthenes.org.cy) of Cyprus University of Technology (www.cut.ac.cy) invites applications for one or two (2) positions of ASSISTANT RESEARCHER A’ POSITIONS IN REMOTE SENSING AND DIGITAL ARCHAEOLOGY for the REVITALISER and ENIGMA projects. The REVITALISER project is funded by the EU research and innovation program, Grant Agreement No 101159951. The ENIGMA project is funded by the EU research and innovation program, Grant Agreement No 101094237. The positions are open either on a full-time or part-time employment basis.

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is an autonomous Centre of Excellence with Cyprus University of Technology as its sole stakeholder, specialising in Earth observation, Space technology and geospatial analysis. Cyprus University of Technology has 13 years of experience in Earth observation and geospatial analysis. Through the “EXCELSIOR” H2020 Teaming Project (https://excelsior2020.eu/), ERATOSTHENES CoE aspires to become a Digital Innovation Hub for Earth Observation and Geospatial Information by offering knowledge, responsible research, open innovation and application services capable of sustaining Cyprus’ development. ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to actively contribute to the European Research Area (ERA) priorities in Atmosphere and Climate, Resilient Societies and Big Earth Data Analytics, as well as to become the reference Earth Observation/Geoinformation Centre for research and innovation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa (EMMENA) region.

A core activity of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is to conduct high caliber, state-of-the-art research, both basic and applied. A central task is to acquire research funding for the Centre, to provide facilities to the researchers, and to support them to acquire funding for their research independently and via international and local collaborations. Collaborations with industrial partners are particularly encouraged and facilitated.

Appropriate measures of success will be collaboratively determined based on the Centre’s strategic growth plan and sustainability targets.

Description of the Position
The Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence is seeking two Assistant Researchers A’ in Remote Sensing and Digital Archaeology. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and technology in the preservation and study of archaeological sites and cultural heritage in Cyprus and in the EMMENA region.

The Assistant Researchers A’ will play a crucial role in the application and development of digital technologies to advance the field of Cultural Property Protection. This includes the analysis, interpretation, and processing of satellite and UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) imagery to identify illegal archaeological excavations and monitor archaeological sites. Key responsibilities include integrating aerial and terrestrial remote sensing data with semi-automatic and AI-driven algorithms.

The Assistant Researchers A’ will also be involved in the use of open-source software tools, contributing to the development of new methodologies for heritage preservation. This position requires a strong analytical mindset, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively communicate findings and collaborate with a diverse team of experts and stakeholders.

The ideal candidates will possess a robust background in remote sensing and digital archaeology. A basic knowledge of a programming language (i.e., Python) is considered an advantage. The candidate should demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, a passion for innovation, and the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Developing applications to support the REVITALISER and ENIGMA projects;
• Annotate and label image datasets for AI processing purposes;
• Developing, testing and implementing workflow to project standards;
• Producing documentation and ensuring proposed solutions are fit for purpose;
• Support different research activities within the Cultural Heritage cluster of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence;
• Working closely with other researchers and partners in the project and to ensure its successful outcomes.

Qualifications
• Bachelor in Archaeology, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, or related field;
• Master in Archaeology, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, or related field.

The appointment will be for a period of one year (12 months) with the prospect of renewal for another one year. The tentative starting date will be 01/10/2024. The annual gross salary for the (full-time) position will range from €25468.08 to €29592.08, depending on qualifications and experience. It is noted that there is provision for 13th salary which is proportionally incorporated in the monthly remuneration.
