UP TO TWO (2) POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER POSITIONS IN REMOTE SENSING FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND PROTECTION

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (www.eratosthenes.org.cy) of Cyprus University of Technology (www.cut.ac.cy) invites applications for one or two (2) positions of POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN REMOTE SENSING FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND PROTECTION for the REVITALISER and ENIGMA projects. The REVITALISER project is funded by the EU research and innovation program, Grant Agreement No 101159951. The ENIGMA project is funded by the EU research and innovation program, Grant Agreement No 101094237. The positions are open either on a full-time or part-time employment basis.

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is an autonomous Centre of Excellence with Cyprus University of Technology as its sole stakeholder, specialising in Earth observation, Space technology and geospatial analysis. Cyprus University of Technology has 13 years of experience in Earth observation and geospatial analysis. Through the “EXCELSIOR” H2020 Teaming Project (https://excelsior2020.eu/), ERATOSTHENES CoE aspires to become a Digital Innovation Hub for Earth Observation and Geospatial Information by offering knowledge, responsible research, open innovation and application services capable of sustaining Cyprus’ development. ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to actively contribute to the European Research Area (ERA) priorities in Atmosphere and Climate, Resilient Societies and Big Earth Data Analytics, as well as to become the reference Earth Observation/Geoinformation Centre for research and innovation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa (EMMENA) region.

A core activity of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is to conduct high caliber, state-of-the-art research, both basic and applied. A central task is to acquire research funding for the Centre, to provide facilities to the researchers, and to support them to acquire funding for their research independently and via international and local collaborations. Collaborations with industrial partners are particularly encouraged and facilitated.

Appropriate measures of success will be collaboratively determined based on the Centre’s strategic growth plan and sustainability targets.

Description of the Position
The Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence is seeking highly skilled candidates to develop methodologies using space-borne and aerial data for studying, monitoring, and protecting archaeological sites and heritage assets. These roles are part of the REVITALISER and ENIGMA projects.

The successful candidates will be responsible for analyzing, interpreting, and processing satellite and UAV imagery, integrating these data with semi-automatic and AI-driven algorithms. They will utilize optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery (SAR) along with open-source software tools to identify buried structures, monitor sites at risk of looting, and assess anthropogenic and natural hazards. The goal is to create mitigation strategies and early warning systems in coordination with national and international authorities.

The ideal candidates should possess proficiency in analyzing and processing satellite and UAV imagery, along with experience in utilizing semi-automatic and AI-driven algorithms. Familiarity with optical and SAR imagery and open-source software tools is considered an advantage. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail are crucial, as is the ability to communicate effectively and coordinate with various stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Developing applications to support the REVITALISER and ENIGMA projects;
• Developing, testing and implementing workflow to project standards;
• Process 2D and 3D datasets with image- and range-based techniques;
• Prepare datasets for AI-related process;
• Producing documentation and ensuring proposed solutions are fit for purpose;
• Support different research activities within the project;
• Working closely with other researchers and partners in the project and to ensure its successful outcomes.

Qualifications
• PhD in Archaeology, Remote Sensing, Surveying Engineer, or related field.

The appointment will be for a period of one year (12 months) with the prospect of renewal for another one year. The tentative starting date will be 1 October 2024. The annual gross salary for the (full-time) position will range from €36732.10 to €41408.54, depending on qualifications and experience. It is noted that there is provision for 13th salary which is proportionally incorporated in the monthly remuneration.
