The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

  1. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
  2. The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
  3. The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
  4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated professional in Atmospheric Sciences to join the Institute’s Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO; https://cao.cyi.ac.cy/) of CARE-C on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassas’ campus and other CAO Facilities.

CAO has been established by the Cyprus Institute in 2015 with the objective to establish long-term (multi-year) high quality atmospheric observations representative of the EMME region and better document air pollution and climate change (current levels and future trends). The CAO is currently part of ACTRIS, AERONET, WMO (GAW), TCCON and EMEP international networks and aims to integrate additional EU research infrastructure such as ICOS. This Facility is supporting a large number of CARE-C Faculty conducting research on ambient gas and aerosol science and technology. The CAO gathers the latest generation of scientific instrumentation for in-situ and remote sensing online monitoring of aerosol properties, reactive and greenhouse gases species following international standardized operating procedures.

The successful candidate will advance the CARE-C’s research and innovation agenda in its scientific focus of Atmospheric Observations area through supporting primarily (but not only) long-term GHG observations using in-situ, remote sensing, and mobile platforms. More specifically, the candidate shall be responsible for the full technical operation of ICOS-compliant and TCCON GHG measurements in Cyprus and the further development of long-term GHG observations in the EMME. Although the main focus will be on GHG, the successful candidate will also support research activities on Reactive Trace Gases and more generally contribute to the general activities of CAO.

Through their engagement in the above activities, the successfully recruited candidate will support and lead whenever it is possible; 1) the implementation of competitive research programs of CARE-C on trace gases, 2) the organization and implementation of intensive field campaigns in Cyprus and abroad on GHG, 3) specific technical / instrument developments related to long term observations, 4) support to early career research scientists (e.g. PhD candidates and Postdoc fellows) on trace gas measurements, 5) the further processing and exploitation of atmospheric data and drafting of scientific communications (publications, posters) in close collaboration with the EOD/GHG research group.

The ideal candidate will bring strong technical skill in Knowledge of and experience with scientific instrumentations for trace gas measurements, problem-solving abilities, high level of autonomy and a passion for innovation in a collaborative international research environment. They will be a member of a dynamic team composed by young talented scientists and technical experts, working in a highly attractive and international environment (English is the formal working language at the CyI). The candidate will access and benefit from large European scientific networks (e.g. ICOS, TCCON) for training and dissemination activities and get offered the opportunity to participate in a number of field campaigns within Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

  1. Lead the long-term GHG monitoring activities in Cyprus (routine operation, control, calibration, data quality check, and scheduled maintenance) herewith supporting the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory to integrate (and operate its GHG measurements under) the ICOS European Research Infrastructure and TCCON
  2. Lead the development of reactive/greenhouse gas instruments/sensors on mobile platforms (drone, car, ship), enhancing the operation of commercially available scientific instrumentation by applying hardware / software modifications
  3. Support the overall CAO long-term monitoring activities in all of its atmospheric components (in-situ/remote sensing, gases/aerosols)
  4. Organize and participate to international field experiments dedicated to atmospheric observations
  5. Participate to the scientific exploitation of atmospheric measurements in support of early career scientists (PhDs, Post-docs)

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree or equivalent Engineering degree in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Systems/Processes in Instrumentation, or related field (add text here, hit return for new item)
  • Co-authoring peer-review scientific communications related to GHG observations
  • Valid driving license
  • At least 3 years’ experience in atmospheric GHG measurements
  • Experience in atmospheric instrumentation (operation, maintenance)
  • Programming skills (e.g. Matlab or Python)
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language, both verbal and writing

Position Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in ICOS-compliant GHG observations
  • Experience in electronics and optics
