The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

  4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Institute’s EEWRC Centre, Water Department on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

The Water Department investigates hydrologic and ecosystems processes and tests agro-ecosystems innovations and management practices through field observations, experimental research and modelling, in cooperation with various stakeholders in Cyprus and abroad.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the research projects of the Water Department, with a special focus on the newly funded Horizon Europe TERRASAFE Project on "Terrestrial resilience and restoration strategies for (semi) arid and fragile ecosystems through a multi-actor approach". This project is a cooperation between research groups and innovators from Austria, Cyprus, England, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Tunisia. This project aims to develop an integrated approach for the mapping and analysis of land degradation status, drivers, impacts and responses.

The successful candidate will process and analyse satellite and airborne imagery and other spatial datasets to understand the effect of climate and humans on the productivity and degradation of land and water resources. The candidate will lead the development of GIS Apps (Google Earth Engine). The candidate will contribute to hydro-ecological fieldwork and ground-truthing activities.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

  1. Processing and analysis of remote sensing imagery (optical, radar) and other spatial data for land and water productivity and degradation assessments.
  2. Development of GIS Apps (Google Earth Engine).
  3. Drone-, field- and lab-based surveys, sampling and analysis of soil, water and plant processes

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physical Geography, Geoinformatics, GIS and Remote Sensing or Related Field
  • Proven experience in processing and analysis of satellite and airborne imagery (optical, radar), including geometric and atmospheric corrections
  • Proven experience in programming and statistical analysis, e.g., Python, Javascript, C, R.
  • Strong spatial analysis and GIS skills (ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine)

Position Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with ecohydrological field and laboratory work
  • Experience in use of drones
  • Drivers’ license
  • Greek language will be considered an advantage

Duration of appointment:

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds.

Remuneration details:

Salary Band: CYI4(1-9)

Position’s Starting Salary: CYI4.1 - €37641.89, CYI4.2 - €39457.60, CYI4.3 - €41273.31, CYI4.4 - €43089.02
