The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly motivated and qualified individual to join the PROTEAS Facility team of the Institute as a Research Technical Specialist. The successful candidate will be responsible to support, organize and coordinate the technical activities performed at the PROTEAS Facility.
The PROTEAS Facility, located in Pentakomo’s coastal area, is devoted to research, development and testing of Renewable Energy Sources with emphasis on Concentrating Solar Thermal (CST), Thermal Energy Storage (TES) and thermal Desalination of Sea Water (DSW) for bridging the gap between fundamental research and industrial needs. PROTEAS is a multi-purpose facility built around a central hub of molten salt Thermal Energy Storage (TES), hybridised with batteries and other forms of storage. The facility is capable of poly-generation of heat and electricity using renewable energy technologies (CST, Wind, PV) and integration of these energy technologies with the TES, batteries, and seasonal water storage. Optimal solar radiation and environmental conditions are monitored via a state-of-the-art BSRN station.

Furthermore, the successful candidate will be involved in the daily operation and maintenance of the Facility and will coordinate the execution of the purchasing and procurement processes. The selected candidate will be required to support with the installation of equipment, sensors, components and systems which will serve the research projects. The Research Technical Specialist will be organizing and implementing all the accesses that are related to the StoRIES and RISEnergy projects, under the supervision and guidance of the PROTEAS Facility Manager.

The initial period of the appointment will be for a fixed-term duration of 2 years with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. The rank of the position will depend on the successful candidate’s skills, qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  1. Daily overview of the operation and scientific equipment of the PROTEAS Facility.
  2. Ensuring the overall smooth operation and contribute to the development of its activities.
  3. Support on the maintenance and development of scientific equipment.
  4. Support with the purchasing and procurement process of tools, machinery and supplies for the Facility.
  5. Record keeping of all ongoing activities at the facility, including visitors, personnel visits, experiments, maintenance work etc.
  6. Keeping and updating, an equipment/consumables inventory (i.e. components and subsystems).
  7. Ensuring that the workspace and scientific equipment indoor and outdoor are maintained in an excellent condition.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of science or engineering (Electrical/Electronic engineering / Computer engineering / Mechanical engineering / Experimental physics / Aerospace engineering)
  2. Proven technical ability and work related experience.
  3. Good knowledge of the English language both verbal and written.
  4. High level of communication and interpersonal skills.
  5. High level of problem-solving and organizational skills
  6. Good team player with the ability to adapt to a multicultural and multidisciplinary research environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master degree in a relevant field of science or engineering
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience on a similar role will be an advantage
  • Experience of supporting scientific research projects
  • Experience related to industrial environment (interaction or work experience)
  • Experience of procurement of scientific instruments and tools
  • Specialised experience in one or more of the following fields: Instrumentation / Control systems / Solar-Thermal plants / Concentrating Solar Power / co-generation of concentrated solar power and desalination
  • Thermal storage concepts (e.g. molten salts)
  • Familiarity with LabView software
  • Familiarity with software interlocks systems
  • Familiarity with design and implementation of database
  • Knowledge of the Greek language will be considered an advantage.
