Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

The Impact and Policy Department (IPD) of the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), under the EMME-CARE project, provides essential insights into key processes of the Earth System. The IPD Emissions team, is responsible for numerical methodologies, data analysis and processing tools of anthropogenic emissions from Cyprus and the region, emission reduction scenarios and effectiveness of Air Quality Plans measures, towards accurate and up-to-date reporting of GHG and air pollutants.

The CARE-C Centre of Excellence of the Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly motivated and qualified individual to join the Impacts and Policy Department as a Technical Research Specialist with knowledge on data science. The successful candidate will contribute to the research objectives of the IPD, within the framework of national and/or international service projects in:

  • Assessment of AQPs for the area of interest
  • Emission inventories, modelling and analysis
  • Large data processing, curating and visualizing
  • Inputs for Air quality modelling and forecasting

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop in an international research environment and work in collaboration with linked academic institutions in the EMME region.

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  1. Support in monitoring, verifying, reporting and compiling national total and gridded local emission inventories for air pollutants and GHG
  2. Investigate and test methodologies for scenario analysis in compliance with and adherence to European and national regulations and directives
  3. Contribute to research related to current and projected GHG and air pollutants emissions, and use of satellite observations in these subjects
  4. Help in publishing and communicating the research output and implications at different levels, including academic, public and policy related
  5. Actively pursue regional and international networking and capacity-building activities, especially in relation to emission inventory development and air quality modelling communities such as CAMS, TFEIP, EU WG, FAIRMODE activities, JRC community etc.
  6. Technical contribution to proposals for attracting external funding to sustain in the medium/long-term the scientific activities relevant to this subject
  7. Willingness to participate in the educational programs of the Institute and the training of new research and technical staff

Required Qualifications

  1. Master Degree in Environmental or Atmospheric Science or Mathematics, statistics or Data Science
  2. Knowledge of data mathematical and/or statistical tools that can be used for Emission Monitoring, reporting and verification and satellite data processing
  3. Python or R, with experience in data cleaning, transformation, and visualization through educational courses or trainings
  4. 1-year experience (after BSc including experience through Master Degree)
  5. Good knowledge of IT tools such as Excel, Access, big data processing and/or GIS
  6. High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to a multicultural/multidisciplinary environment
  7. High level of organizational, analytical and problem-solving skill
  8. Excellent knowledge of English, both verbal and writing, demonstrated through Diploma or previous academic studies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with policies and regulations for air quality and national emissions and with Best Available Technologies for different emission sectors
  • Knowledge of Greek will be considered an advantage
