UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS
SPECIAL SCIENTIST FOR RESEARCH

Title: Special Scientist for Research in non-Newtonian flow modelling and simulation
No. of Positions: One (1)
Category: Employment contract for one (1) year, with a possibility of renewal.
Location: University of Cyprus, Nicosia, Cyprus

The University of Cyprus (Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering & Department of Mathematics and Statistics) announces one part-time (110 hours/month) Special Scientist position in the area of non-Newtonian flow modelling and simulation for the recently funded project CRaFTC.

Applicants need not be citizens of the Republic of Cyprus. Applicants should however ensure, before applying, that in case they are selected they will be residing in Cyprus on a full-time basis during the employment period; submission of application implies acceptance of this condition.

The Cyprus Rheology and Fluidics Technology Centre (CRaFTC) project is funded by the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) of Cyprus (Research Program: RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURES / SMALL SCALE INFRASTRUCTURES) and , coordinated by the Cyprus University of Technology. In addition to the University of Cyprus, tCRaFTCalso involves other specialized Partners namely one Centre of Excellence (CYENS), and one Industrial Partner (EMBIO Diagnostics). The new Center will provide the industry and the national Research & Innovation ecosystem a stateof-the-art Complex Fluids Research facility. CRaFTC will include the necessary Complex Fluids Research tools, ranging from Basic and Advanced Rheological Characterization, Fluidics and Microfluidics Experimental Facilities and Equipment, to Theoretical and Computational Modelling and Advanced Data Processing Methods.
The role of the UCy in the Project is to perform numerical simulations of various non-Newtonian flows, governed by constitutive equations that describe rheological phenomena such as viscoplasticity and/or viscoelasticity (e.g. blood flow).
In this context, the UCy announces one (1) Special Scientist for Research position, focusing on the investigation of such flows via numerical simulations.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The successful candidate is expected to:
• Setup and perform numerical simulations of non-Newtonian flows
• Prepare project reports and deliverables
• Write scientific papers describing the research outcome, to be published in international peer-reviewed journals
• Present the research outcomes at scientific conferences
The University of Cyprus is equipped with workstations and a High-Performance Computing (HPC) Centre which will be available for the conduction of the numerical simulations. The software to be used for the work will be either in-house codes or third party codes, open-source or proprietary (e.g. OpenFOAM).

QUALIFICATIONS
• Applicants must have a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or other field relevant to fluid mechanics.
• A Ph.D. in any of the aforementioned fields is considered a major advantage.
• Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics algorithms and theory (e.g. Finite Volume or Finite Element methods) will be a significant advantage.
• Experience in programming (e.g. C++ or python) will also be considered an advantage, especially if related to CFD (e.g. OpenFOAM programming).
• Experience and familiarity with non-Newtonian flows and rheology is considered as an important advantage.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS
The position concerns part-time employment (110 hours/month) for a duration of one (1) year, with a potential of renewal for a second year depending on successful progress and performance. The gross monthly salary will depend on qualifications and experience, up to a maximum of 1800€. From this amount, employee contributions to the Cyprus government funds will be deducted. 13th salary bonus is not provided.

APPLICATION
Interested candidates should send the following items to Dr. Alexandros Syrakos, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Department, University of Cyprus, at the email address syrakos.alexandros@ucy.ac.cy :
• Cover letter explaining the interest of the applicant for the position and their employment availability date.
• Short summary of prior work experiences, activities and accomplishments (can be combined with the cover letter) (2 pages maximum)
• A detailed curriculum vitae in English or in Greek
• Copies of academic degrees and transcripts
• Identify at least two referees that can provide reference letters

The applications should be submitted as soon as possible, but not later than Friday, 22nd of March 2024, at 5 p.m.
For more information, candidates may contact Dr. Alexandros Syrakos (tel. +357 22892261 and email syrakos.alexandros@ucy.ac.cy).
The best 3 candidates that satisfy the required qualifications, will be interviewed by a 3- member Committee.
Candidates shall be informed of the result of their application by the relevant entity.
The University of Cyprus shall collect and process your personal data according to the provisions of the General Regulation on Personal Data 2016/679 (EU).
