The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) invites applications for a highly motivated professional to join the Institute at the position of Scientific Coordinator. The Scientific Coordinator will be a member of the Research Management Support (RIMS) Office of Institute. RIMS is the Institute’s central structure providing CyI researchers with research management and administration pre-award (at the proposal preparation phase) and post-award (at the grant negotiation and management phase) support. The RIMS Office liaises and acts as the CyI contact point with Funders and other national and international authorities, promotes cross-centre collaboration and leads institutional bids for funding and selected resulting contracts. Finally, RIMS develops and maintains the CyI policies and tools needed to ensure efficient and uniformity in research management and administration activities throughout the CyI and is responsible for reviewing the compliance of all prospective research grants and collaboration agreements with CyI policies and regulations.
The successful candidate will mainly support the pre-award activities of the institute, including but not limited to the identification of appropriate funding schemes and the preparation and submission of research proposals. Initial placement is foreseen at the EEWRC Centre.
The selected candidate will report to the Director of Research and Technical Support and the Director of EEWRC, and will work closely with all personnel of the RIMS office, CyI researchers and Faculty as well as external collaborators. The position requires proven experience in the preparation and submission of research proposals at the European Commission, the Research and Innovation Foundation or other funding bodies.
The appointment will be on a full-time basis, initially for a duration of 2 years, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds. The remuneration of the position will depend on the selected candidate’s qualifications.
Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:
- Provides services to the management and the researchers of the allocated Centre for the development of research collaborations, participation in research and innovation funding programs, and other activities promoting the Centre’s and the Institute’s development agendas.
- Identifies and promotes funding opportunities,
- Supports the development and writing of research and innovation proposals,
- Provides training, personalised assistance and advice to researchers concerning funding programs,
- Oversees research and innovation projects (various funding sources including EU, Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF)),
- Executes project management, coordination and administration activities, including financial reporting, deliverables, and communication with funding organisations,
- Executes horizontal grant activities as decided by the Centre Director, such as innovation and dissemination activities.
- Ensures compliance of proposals and grants with CyI and Funders’ policies and rules,
- Develops relationships and liaises with Funding authorities,
- Contributes to the strategic planning of the Centre,
- Monitors the administrative and financial implementation of the Centre’s funded grants and ensures, in collaboration with the Centre Director and the Head of ReMS, and actively supports and promotes the efficient use of the Centre core and Soft funding,
- Supports the Centre Director with the governance and management of the Centre
- Co-supervises, with the Head of ReMS, the work of post-award Officers managing projects under their Centre,
- Contributes to the development of policies, methodologies and tools relevant to their expertise at the Institute level
Required Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in any scientific field
- 5 years relevant experience
- Previous experience of writing and/or supporting researchers in writing research proposals
- Experience in managing EU and/or national-funded research projects
- Excellent knowledge of oral and written Greek and English
- Excellent knowledge of office IT
- Experience in presenting to medium and large audiences
- High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt to a multicultural/multinational environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Candidates combining a PhD degree with additional work experience will have a competitive advantage.
- Previous experience in a research/academic institution.
- Previous engagement in natural sciences and/or engineering research activities.
- Previous experience in the coordination of diverse stakeholders, e.g. local authorities, non-profit organizations, universities, small and medium-sized businesses.
