The Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for the filling of one (1) position of a Special Scientist-Research with full-time employment, to conduct research in the remits of the project TETHYS: Twinning for Excellence in Floating Wind Turbine and Hydrogen Systems funded by the European Commission.

A cutting-edge research initiative focused on the integration of offshore floating wind turbines and green hydrogen systems. TETHYS aims to advance research and innovation in renewable energy and green technologies, crucial for Europe's Green Deal and Cyprus' energy future.
TETHYS is a collaborative effort between the University of Cyprus (UCY), leading institutions from Italy (University of Florence, Department of Industrial Engineering) and Denmark (Aarhus University, School of Business and Social Sciences), and a pioneering Greek start-up (NEEST). The project seeks to strengthen UCY's R&I capacity in offshore floating wind (FOW) and green hydrogen (H2) systems, addressing the critical needs of the Cypriot and European energy sectors.

Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will engage in a multidisciplinary research team as part of the TETHYS project, focusing on digital twins of offshore wind energy and green hydrogen systems and their utilization to decarbonise the maritime sectors.

Compulsory Qualifications:

• Educational Background:
o A Bachelor's degree (BSc) and / or and a Master's degree in Civil Engineering &
Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field with a grade
of at least 2.1 or equivalent.
o A PhD in Civil Engineering & Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field with research focus on offshore and coastal engineering, digital twins or a closely related research subject.

• Language Proficiency:
o Advanced knowledge of English, both written and spoken.

• Research and Academic Skills:
o Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
o Ability to conduct independent research and work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and across multidisciplinary sectors.
o Very good written and verbal communication skills.
o Experience in programming languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB for data analysis and modeling. Willingness to work with other programming languages if needed.
o Experience with computational tools and software relevant to the research topics

Specific Duties Include:
• Conduct research aligned with the TETHYS project objectives, particularly in the development of digital twins for offshore wind energy and green hydrogen systems and their utilization in the maritime and other sectors.
• Write articles and publish research findings in scientific journals and conferences.
• Prepare and submit research proposals to secure funding for the TETHYS project.
• Prepare and submit deliverables for the TETHYS project
• Provide support in the preparation of research proposals and deliverable.
• Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.
• Support the management of research, training and dissemination activities within the TETHYS project.
• Lead and / or contribute to the design and delivery of research dissemination and exploitation activities and stakeholder engagement actions.
• Contribute to the development of educational programs related to the research activities of the TETHYS project.
• Facilitate collaborations between the University of Cyprus and international partners to promote knowledge exchange and best practices.
• Participate in training and mobility programs designed to enhance your research and professional skills, as part of TETHYS.

Terms of employment
The position is offered on a 24-month contract basis with annual appraisal, and the possibility for extension subject to fund availability. The minimum threshold for gross annual earnings is set at €28,000 for 140 hours of work (€2,333/month) and will range up to the maximum threshold for gross annual earnings of €36,000 for 140 hours of work (€3,000/month), depending on experience and qualifications, as well as the tasks of the project. Employee contributions to the various Governmental Funds will be deducted from the gross amount. The gross earnings also include a proportionate amount of the 13th salary. Maternity leave will be granted based on Maternity Protection Law 1997(Ν.100(Ι)/1997), and the existing amendment laws.
The employment starting date is on the 2nd of October 2024 or soon after.
