The Nireas International Water Research Center of the University of Cyprus would like to announce one (1) vacant full-time position in the capacity of a Special Scientist – Research at the Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory in the external funded research programme:“ A mathematical modelling and computationally-assisted approach based on gene regulation to predict bioelectrochemical systems performance for water resilience’’.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Mathematics or other related sciences.
  • Knowledge of biological/microbial systems.
  • Knowledge of biological and chemical processes.
  • Knowledge of mathematical modeling and programming.
  • Basic laboratory experience.
  • Very good knowledge of the english language.
  • Excellent organizational skills, team spirit and interpersonal communication skills, integrity of character and taking initiatives.
  • Willingness for interdisciplinary learning.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology will be considered an additional qualification.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. The tasks will mainly concern the research activities of a research program aimed at developing a mathematical modeling and computational assisted framework for the design and optimization of electro-bioremediation of oil contaminated water. This will be achieved by interpreting cellular regulation to decipher the complexity of oil biodegradation, product biosynthesis and microbial growth.
  2. Mathematical modeling.
  3. Parameter estimation and global sensitivity analysis.
  4. Data collection.
  5. Waste biodegradation and molecular biology experiments.
  6. Maintaining cleanliness, proper organization of the laboratory and compliance with laboratory hygiene and safety rules.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

TERMS OF CONTRACT

The employment of the Special Scientist will be on a contract basis. The duration of employment will be initially for 1 year, with possibility of renewal for 1 more year. The monthly gross salary will be €1.533,80. From this amount, employee contributions to the Cyprus government funds will be deducted. There is no provision for 13th Salary. There is possibility of pursuing a PhD in Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
