The Cyprus Institute invites applications for highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Specialized Research Technical Scientist in Atmospheric Modelling within the Environmental Observation Department (EOD) of CARE-C, on a full-time basis (100% FTE). The position is based in CyI’s Athalassa Campus in Nicosia Cyprus, where on-site presence is required.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Design and develop a nowcasting scheme and create robust, user-friendly software solutions tailored to our team's needs.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to implement, optimize, and document software for real-time data analysis and forecasting.
  • Contribute to innovation by integrating advanced algorithms and ensuring the software aligns with project goals and deliverables.

More specifically, the candidate will be supporting the implementation of advanced nowcasting algorithms for the World Bank funded AirQforce project, AI-driven models, as well as real-time data processing pipelines, and user-centric software solutions to meet project requirements and enhance team workflows.

The successful candidate must have a background in software development, data analysis, algorithm design, and expertise in real-time forecasting or nowcasting systems. This is a prerequisite for the rapid engagement of the candidate in ongoing research projects which require immediate knowledge and experience on nowcasting algorithms and AI-driven models. Understanding of atmospheric physics and meteorology will be considered a great advantage.

The rank of the position (Junior Specialized RTS or Specialized RTS) will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

  1. Develop and Implement Nowcasting Algorithms: Design and implement software solutions for real-time data acquisition and processing. Test and debug software to ensure high-quality performance and reliability.
  2. Integrate AI-Driven Models: Utilize machine learning and AI techniques to enhance forecasting accuracy and efficiency.
  3. Develop Software Solutions: Build and maintain robust, user-friendly software tailored to the team's needs. Work closely with the team and external collaborators to understand requirements and deliver innovative solutions.
  4. Real-Time Data Processing: Create and manage data pipelines for processing and analyzing large volumes of real-time data.
  5. Documentation and Reporting: Document software development processes, algorithms, and system functionalities.
  6. Support Research and Innovation: Contribute to integrating cutting-edge technologies, including AI advancements, into the nowcasting scheme.
  7. Training and Support: Provide guidance and technical support to team members in using the software and tools developed.
  8. Contribute to Grant Proposals: Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and researchers to define software requirements. Assist in preparing grant applications by providing technical expertise and outlining innovative approaches for nowcasting projects. The candidate is not expected to write full proposal on its own.

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree as per Job Description for Junior/Specialised RTS
  • Experience required as per Job Description for Junior/Specialised RTS
  • Proven experience working with AI tools
  • Background in IT
  • Experience in statistics and mathematical modelling
  • Proficiency in programming. Working with Python’s scientific computing libraries (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, Matplotlib) will be valued
  • Experience with inverse modelling (FLEXPART, NAME, STILT, etc)
  • Understanding of physical and mathematical concepts.
  • Willingness to travel and spend time in partner organizations.
  • Experience with database systems (SQL, NoSQL, or time-series databases).

Position Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 year experience in AI-driven models

Duration of appointment:

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 12 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds.

Remuneration details:

Salary Band: Junior Specialised RTS CYI3(1-14), Specialised RTS CYI4(1-11)

Position’s Starting Salary: Junior Specialised RTS CYI3.1 - €30323.41, Specialised RTS CYI4.1 - €37641.89
