The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

  1. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
  2. The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
  3. The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
  4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications from highly qualified and motivated Researchers to join CaSToRC’s Computational Physics Group on a full-time basis (100% FTE) at its premises at the Athalassa Campus.

The successful candidates should have a background in theoretical physics with specialisation in lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) simulations and analyses. A strong background in large scale, lattice QCD, multi-GPU application codes will be considered an advantage.

In particular, the candidates will i) work on application codes of the group, including implementing new functionality or porting new methods to new HPC systems, ii) running these codes on Tier-0 systems such as those available via EuroHPC, and iii) performing analysis and postprocessing of the resulting data, including documenting the results in presentations and preparing manuscripts.

The successful candidates will be engaged in the physics projects of the group, and specifically in the projects MuonHVP, DeNuTra, and PulseQCD, funded by the Research and Innovation Foundation of Cyprus, with topics which include hadron structure, muon anomalous magnetic moment, hyperons, hadron resonances, renormalization of extended operators, and large-scale simulations and machine learning approaches for lattice QCD. The group is a member of the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

  1. Contribute to the research activities of the group in the area of lattice QCD. This will include activities as required by the projects of the group in the physics areas highlighted above
  2. Prepare presentations, manuscripts, and other material as needed, documenting the results
  3. Develop, implement, and scale new functionality in the application codes of the group

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Theoretical Physics
  • Track record of research in lattice QCD, as demonstrated by publication record and conference presentations
  • Experience in lattice QCD simulations and analyses

Position Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong background in using multi-GPU application codes will be considered an advantage
  • Experience using large-scale supercomputing systems for production calculations in lattice QCD
  • Experience in preparing proposals for computer time
